The history behind Bolivian phone numbers

In the early days of telephony, Bolivia had only a few telephone lines, which were installed in La Paz, the capital city, in the late 19th century. The country's first telephone exchange was established in La Paz in 1906, and by the 1920s, several other cities had telephone service as well.

In the early years of telephone service in Bolivia, telephone numbers were relatively short, typically consisting of four or five digits. As the number of telephone subscribers grew, however, the country adopted a more structured numbering plan in the 1960s, with longer telephone numbers that were based on geographic location.

Today, Bolivia's telephone numbering plan is based on a 10-digit system, with the first two digits indicating the area code and the remaining eight digits representing the individual telephone number. Bolivia has several area codes, with each code corresponding to a particular geographic region.

In recent years, Bolivia has modernized its telecommunications infrastructure, with the expansion of mobile phone networks and the introduction of internet-based communications services. This has led to changes in the way that telephone numbers are assigned and used in the country. For example, many Bolivians now use mobile phones as their primary means of communication, and many new telephone numbers are being assigned to mobile phone service providers.

Technical info on Bolivian phone numbers

Bolivia phone numbers are composed of a three-digit area code followed by a seven-digit local number. The area code represents the geographic region where the phone number is located, and there are more than 30 different codes in the country.

To call a Bolivian phone number from abroad, you must first dial the international access code (usually 00 or +) followed by the country code for Bolivia (591) and then the area code and local number. Mobile phone numbers in Bolivia have the prefix "7" and are often referred to as "celulares."
