The history behind Algerian phone numbers
The history of Algeria phone numbers dates back to the early 1960s, shortly after Algeria gained independence from France. The country's first telephone exchange was established in the capital city of Algiers in 1963, and the national telephone network was gradually expanded over the following decades.
Initially, phone numbers in Algeria consisted of six digits, with the first two digits indicating the location of the telephone exchange. However, as the network grew and demand for telephone services increased, the length of phone numbers was expanded to seven digits in the 1980s, and then to eight digits in the 1990s.
Today, phone numbers in Algeria consist of ten digits, with the first two digits indicating the area code and the next eight digits representing the individual subscriber number. The area codes are organized geographically, with the largest cities having their own codes, while smaller towns and villages share codes with nearby areas.
Technical info on Algeria phone numbers
In Algeria, phone numbers consist of 10 digits and are structured in a specific way. The first two digits of the number indicate the type of phone service, with 05 reserved for mobile phones, 02 for landlines in Algiers and its surrounding areas, and 03 for landlines in other parts of the country. The next three digits identify the specific network provider, and the final five digits make up the unique subscriber number. When making a local call within Algeria, you only need to dial the 10-digit phone number, without any additional prefixes or codes.
