The history behind Belarus phone numbers
The history of Belarus phone numbers can be traced back to the Soviet era, when the country was part of the Soviet Union. During this time, the phone numbering system in Belarus was based on a 7-digit format, with the first digit representing the city or region.
After Belarus gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the country established its own national numbering plan. The plan adopted a 9-digit format, with the first two digits representing the area code, followed by a 7-digit local number. The area codes were assigned based on the geographic location of the phone number, with larger cities and regions having multiple area codes.
In 2009, the Belarusian government announced plans to introduce a new national numbering plan to accommodate the growing demand for telephone numbers. The new plan involved adding an additional digit to the existing 9-digit format, resulting in a 10-digit phone number. The implementation of this plan began in 2010 and was completed in 2011.
Today, phone numbers in Belarus are based on a 10-digit format, with the first two digits representing the area code and the remaining 8 digits representing the local number. The area codes are assigned based on the geographic location of the phone number, with larger cities and regions having multiple area codes.
Technical info on Belarus phone numbers
Belarus phone numbers follow the international format of +375, with the country code at the beginning. The next two digits represent the area code, followed by a 7-digit subscriber number. The area code for Minsk, the capital city of Belarus, is 17. Mobile phone numbers in Belarus begin with 25, 29, 33, or 44, and have a total of 9 digits after the country code.
