The history behind Tanzanian phone numbers
The history of Tanzania phone numbers dates back to the early 1990s, when the government of Tanzania launched a major telecommunications infrastructure project aimed at connecting the country to the global telecommunications network. Prior to this, Tanzania had a very limited telecommunications infrastructure, with only a few thousand landlines in operation.
In 1994, the government of Tanzania established the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL), which became the primary provider of telecommunications services in the country. The company introduced the first mobile phone network in Tanzania in 1994, which was called Mobitel.
Over the years, the telecommunications industry in Tanzania has undergone significant growth and transformation. Today, there are several mobile phone networks in operation in the country, including Vodacom Tanzania, Airtel Tanzania, Tigo Tanzania, and Zantel. In addition, there are also several internet service providers in Tanzania, which provide broadband and wireless internet services.
The phone numbers in Tanzania are regulated by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), which is responsible for managing the allocation of phone numbers to the various telecommunications companies in the country. The numbering plan for Tanzania follows the ITU-T recommendation E.164, which is an international standard for telephone numbering.
Technical info on Tanzanian phone numbers
In Tanzania, phone numbers are 10 digits long and are structured in such a way that they can identify the network provider and the region in which the number is registered. The first four digits of a Tanzanian phone number represent the network provider, while the remaining six digits indicate the unique subscriber number.
The three main network providers in Tanzania are Vodacom, Airtel, and Tigo. Vodacom is the largest network provider in Tanzania, and its phone numbers start with the digits 075 or 065. Airtel, the second-largest provider, uses the prefixes 068, 078, and 077, while Tigo's numbers begin with 071, 065, and 067.
It is important to note that Tanzania uses a closed numbering plan, which means that phone numbers cannot be ported between network providers. Additionally, mobile number portability (MNP) is not yet available in Tanzania, although it is expected to be introduced in the near future.
