Technical info on Brazilian phone numbers
- Country Code:
- Brazil's country code is +55. This code must be dialed before the area code and the local phone number when calling Brazil from abroad.
- Area Codes (DDD - Direct Distance Dialing):
- Area codes in Brazil are two-digit numbers that identify a specific region or city within the country. There are currently 67 area codes in Brazil, ranging from 11 to 99. Major cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília have their own area codes (11, 21, and 61, respectively).
- Local Phone Numbers:
- Brazilian local phone numbers typically have 8 or 9 digits. Fixed landlines usually have 8-digit numbers, while mobile phone numbers have 9 digits. The first digit of a mobile phone number starts with the digit '9'.
- Formatting:
- When representing Brazilian phone numbers in writing, they are often formatted as follows:
- Fixed landline:
- (AA) XXXX-XXXX
- Mobile phone:
- (AA) 9XXXX-XXXX
- Here, "AA" represents the 2-digit area code, and "X" represents the local phone number digits.
- International Dialing Format:
- To dial a Brazilian phone number from abroad, you need to follow this format: +55 AA XXXX-XXXX (for landlines) or +55 AA 9XXXX-XXXX (for mobile phones).
- Domestic Dialing:
- When calling within Brazil, you may need to use the "0" trunk code, followed by a carrier selection code (CSP), the area code, and then the local phone number. The format would look like this: 0CSP-AA-XXXX-XXXX (for landlines) or 0CSP-AA-9XXXX-XXXX (for mobile phones).

The history behind Brazilian phone numbers
-
Early days of telephony (late 19th to early 20th century):
- The first telephone line in Brazil was inaugurated in 1877, only a year after Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone. In the early days of telephony, telephone exchanges used manual switchboards, and operators connected calls by physically plugging in wires. Phone numbers were typically short and assigned locally.
- Introduction of automatic exchanges (mid-20th century):
- As technology advanced, Brazil transitioned from manual to automatic exchanges. The switch to automatic exchanges necessitated the creation of a more structured and standardized numbering system. During this period, Brazil started using longer numbers, usually consisting of 2-3 digits for the area code and 4-5 digits for the subscriber number.
- Growth and modernization (late 20th century):
- Brazil's telecommunications sector experienced significant growth and modernization in the second half of the 20th century, with the expansion of the national telephone network and the launch of mobile services. In the 1990s, Brazil privatized its telecommunications industry, leading to increased competition and innovation.
- Introduction of the current numbering system (1998):
- To accommodate the growing demand for phone lines and mobile services, Brazil adopted a new numbering system in 1998. The system is based on the ITU E.164 recommendation, which is the international standard for telephone numbering plans. In this system, Brazilian phone numbers consist of a two-digit country code (+55), a two-digit area code, and an eight- or nine-digit local number. The area codes are assigned geographically, with major cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro receiving lower area codes (e.g., 11 and 21, respectively).
- Introduction of nine-digit mobile numbers (2012):
- Due to the rapid growth of mobile phone usage in Brazil, the country faced a shortage of available mobile numbers. In 2012, Brazil started transitioning to nine-digit mobile numbers by adding the digit "9" to the beginning of existing eight-digit mobile numbers. The change was first implemented in São Paulo and was gradually expanded to other regions.
