The history behind Colombian phone numbers

The history of Colombian phone numbers can be traced back to the late 19th century, when the first telephone networks were established in major cities like Bogotá and Medellín. At that time, phone numbers were assigned based on the geographical location of the telephone exchange and the individual subscriber's line number.

In the early 20th century, Colombia's telephone network expanded rapidly as more people began to use the technology. The country's first long-distance telephone line was established in 1909 between Bogotá and Medellín. By the 1920s, the country had a national telephone network that connected major cities and towns.

In 1951, the government of Colombia established the state-owned telecommunications company, Telecom, to manage the country's phone network. Telecom continued to expand the network throughout the country, and by the 1970s, most Colombians had access to telephone service.

In the 1990s, the Colombian government began to privatize its telecommunications industry, and in 1994, the country's first private telecom company, Comcel (now Claro), was established. Other private companies soon followed, including Movistar and Tigo.

Technical info on Colombian phone numbers

In Colombia, phone numbers are composed of 10 digits, with the first three digits representing the area code. The area code is important to note when making a call from one region to another within the country. For example, the area code for Bogotá is 1, while the area code for Medellín is 4. When making an international call to Colombia, the country code is +57.

Mobile phone numbers in Colombia begin with a 3, 3-digit operator code and 7-digit subscriber number. It's important to note that some phone numbers in Colombia may require additional digits or codes to make the call.

    Edit / Modify Fly Number

    Feb 14, 2022

I seem to have made an error in my fly number and it appears I’m a digit short.

Is it possible to add another digit to the number?

Is support able to add it in? if so it would be “0” as the last digit.

    NYC phone numbers -Inside scoop

    Nov 01, 2022

So I thought it would be a neat idea to write a little about popular area codes -their history, availability, technical aspects, and perhaps the occasional pop culture reference.  Given that we started in NYC, it only makes sense to start with the big apple. I’ve been outside the city for a while now so […]

How our aesthetically pleasing PBX grid makes configuring your call flow effortless (and fun)

    Jul 04, 2022

Remember those sheets of grid paper they used to hand out in elementary school, the ones you’d use for geometry or to draw graphs. I personally was always attracted to grids, so anytime I got to use them, for example- in school or other places , I was always delighted. Then, around 2012 we released […]
