Technical info on Cypriot phone numbers

    • Cyprus phone numbers follow the European Telephony Numbering Space (E.164) standard, which defines the format and structure of phone numbers.
    • Country code: +357
    • Cyprus has a unique country code, which is +357. When dialing a Cypriot number from abroad, you need to start with the international dialing prefix (e.g., +, 00, or 011, depending on the country you're calling from) followed by the country code (357).
    • Area codes:
    • Cyprus does not have distinct area codes. Instead, it uses a unified numbering system where the first few digits of the local number determine the type of service (mobile or fixed line) and the region. This means that the format of the phone numbers is consistent across the country.
    • Number format:
    • Cypriot phone numbers typically have 8 digits, including the initial digit(s) representing the service type and region. The general format is:
    • +357 ABCC DDDD
    • AB is a 2-digit prefix that indicates the type of service (mobile or fixed line) and region
    • CC and DDDD are 6 digits that make up the local phone number
    • Service type prefixes:
    • The first two digits of a Cypriot phone number (after the country code) signify the service type and region. Here are some common prefixes:
    • 22: Fixed line, Nicosia
    • 23: Fixed line, Famagusta
    • 24: Fixed line, Larnaca
    • 25: Fixed line, Limassol
    • 26: Fixed line, Paphos
    • 9x: Mobile numbers (e.g., 96, 97, 99)

The history behind Cypriot phone numbers

    • Early history:
    • As in many other countries, the telephone system in Cyprus began with manual switchboards, where operators connected calls by plugging and unplugging cables. The first telephone exchange was established in Nicosia in 1909, and the network gradually expanded to other cities.
    • Automation and area codes:
    • In the mid-20th century, Cyprus began to adopt automatic exchanges, which eliminated the need for manual operators. As the number of telephone lines grew, area codes were introduced to simplify the dialing process and organize the network. The area codes were assigned based on geographic regions, with Nicosia using 02, Limassol using 05, Larnaca using 04, Paphos using 06, and Famagusta using 03.
    • Partition and division:
    • In 1974, Cyprus was divided into the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in the north after Turkey's military intervention. This division resulted in separate telephone networks and numbering systems for the two territories. The Republic of Cyprus continued using the existing area codes, while the TRNC implemented its own numbering plan.
    • Transition to a closed numbering system:
    • In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Cyprus transitioned to a closed numbering system with a fixed number of digits for all phone numbers. This change was driven by the rapid growth in telecommunications services and the need for a more efficient numbering plan. The new numbering system required callers to dial the full number, including the area code, regardless of their location.
    • Introduction of mobile and other services:
    • As mobile phone usage increased in Cyprus, new numbering ranges were assigned for mobile services. Typically, mobile numbers in the Republic of Cyprus start with 9x (e.g., 97, 99) and mobile numbers in the TRNC start with 5x (e.g., 53, 54). Additionally, special prefixes were introduced for various services such as toll-free numbers, premium-rate numbers, and emergency services.

    NYC phone numbers -Inside scoop

    Nov 01, 2022

So I thought it would be a neat idea to write a little about popular area codes -their history, availability, technical aspects, and perhaps the occasional pop culture reference.  Given that we started in NYC, it only makes sense to start with the big apple. I’ve been outside the city for a while now so […]

How our aesthetically pleasing PBX grid makes configuring your call flow effortless (and fun)

    Jul 04, 2022

Remember those sheets of grid paper they used to hand out in elementary school, the ones you’d use for geometry or to draw graphs. I personally was always attracted to grids, so anytime I got to use them, for example- in school or other places , I was always delighted. Then, around 2012 we released […]
