The history behind Ukrainian phone numbers

The history of Ukraine's phone numbers can be traced back to the Soviet era, when the country was part of the Soviet Union. During this time, phone numbers were assigned based on the location and type of service.

After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, a new numbering plan was introduced to bring the country in line with international standards. The new plan consisted of a 9-digit number format, with the first two digits indicating the area code, and the remaining seven digits representing the subscriber number.

In 1993, the Ukrainian government established the State Communications Committee to oversee the development of the country's telecommunications infrastructure. This committee was responsible for implementing a range of reforms to modernize and expand the country's phone network.

In 1997, Ukraine joined the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which provided additional support for the development of the country's telecommunications sector. This allowed Ukraine to adopt international standards for phone numbering and to connect with other countries' phone networks.

Technical info on Ukraine phone numbers

Ukrainian phone numbers consist of 10 digits, with the first two digits indicating the region or city code. For example, the code for Kyiv is 44, Lviv is 32, and Odessa is 48. The remaining eight digits are the subscriber's unique number. In Ukraine, mobile numbers typically begin with 0, followed by a digit indicating the network operator. For instance, numbers starting with 067, 068, or 096 belong to the Vodafone network, while 050, 066, and 095 are Kyivstar numbers. Additionally, numbers starting with 063 or 093 belong to Lifecell.

Moreover, calls within Ukraine are usually charged at a flat rate, while international calls are charged on a per-minute basis.

    SMS - possible to receive

    Aug 18, 2013

    Hi,

Would it be possible to receive an SMS? I really don’t mind if it gets emailed or forwarded to the destination number, but at the moment I can get a call come through but inbound SMS seems to simply be discarded.

There is an “SMS History” tab, perhaps you are working on such a feature?

It would be great to give out a number knowing it is fully usable, so if it is not currently something being worked on could I please request it as a feature? (presumably emailing is the least technically difficult/expensive to achieve?)

    Thanks in advance

    NYC phone numbers -Inside scoop

    Nov 01, 2022

So I thought it would be a neat idea to write a little about popular area codes -their history, availability, technical aspects, and perhaps the occasional pop culture reference.  Given that we started in NYC, it only makes sense to start with the big apple. I’ve been outside the city for a while now so […]

How our aesthetically pleasing PBX grid makes configuring your call flow effortless (and fun)

    Jul 04, 2022

Remember those sheets of grid paper they used to hand out in elementary school, the ones you’d use for geometry or to draw graphs. I personally was always attracted to grids, so anytime I got to use them, for example- in school or other places , I was always delighted. Then, around 2012 we released […]
