The history behind Latvian phone numbers

The history of Latvia's phone numbers dates back to the Soviet era when Latvia was part of the Soviet Union. At that time, the country's phone system was fully integrated into the Soviet telephone network, and all phone numbers in Latvia had the prefix "+7" (which was the country code for the Soviet Union) followed by a local area code and a seven-digit subscriber number.

After Latvia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the country started to develop its own phone network and introduce its own country code. In 1992, Latvia was assigned the country code "+371" by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which is still in use today.

Initially, Latvia's phone numbers had a two-digit area code followed by a six-digit subscriber number. However, as the demand for phone numbers grew, the length of subscriber numbers was increased to eight digits in 2000. Today, Latvian phone numbers have an eight-digit format, with the first two digits representing the area code and the remaining six digits representing the subscriber number.

Technical info on Latvian phone numbers

Latvia, a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, uses a national phone numbering plan that is regulated by the Public Utilities Commission (Sabiedrisko pakalpojumu regulēšanas komisija). The Latvian phone number format consists of eight digits and is structured as follows: +371 XXXX XXXX. The first digit of the phone number is reserved for specific services such as emergency services, toll-free numbers, and premium rate services. The second digit indicates the region of the country, and the remaining six digits are assigned to individual telephone lines. Mobile phone numbers in Latvia begin with +371 2 or +371 2X, followed by six digits.

We also added 5 new prefixes/area codes in Estonia - National

The number can only be registered under a company - this is a rare requirement and only applies to the following other countries: (the local area codes - not toll-free)

I’ve been outside the city for a while now so […]

    Jul 04, 2022

Remember those sheets of grid paper they used to hand out in elementary school, the ones you’d use for geometry or to draw graphs. I personally was always attracted to grids, so anytime I got to use them, for example- in school or other places , I was always delighted. Then, around 2012 we released […]
