The history behind Slovene phone numbers
The history of Slovenia phone numbers can be traced back to the late 19th century, when the first telegraph lines were installed in the territory of present-day Slovenia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The first telephone lines were introduced in the early 20th century, and by the 1920s, the telephone network had expanded significantly, connecting most major towns and cities.
After World War II, Slovenia became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and the country's telecommunications system was nationalized and centralized. The first automatic telephone exchange was installed in 1956, and over the next few decades, the telephone network continued to expand, with new exchanges being built in smaller towns and villages.
With the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Slovenia became an independent country and began developing its own telecommunications infrastructure. In 1994, the country introduced a new numbering plan, with the prefix "386" assigned to all telephone numbers in the country. The new system also included mobile phone numbers, which had previously been assigned to the same area codes as landline numbers.
Technical info on Slovenia phone numbers
Slovenia phone numbers are structured with eight digits, with the first digit being a zero. The country code for Slovenia is +386. The second and third digits of the phone number indicate the area code of the city or region where the phone is registered. For example, the area code for Ljubljana is 01, while Maribor's area code is 02. Slovenian phone numbers are assigned to both landlines and mobile phones.
There are several mobile network operators in Slovenia, including Telekom Slovenije, A1, and Telemach.
