Missouri's area codes were first implemented with the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947. Initially, the state was served by area codes 314 and 816. Area code 314 covered the eastern part, including St. Louis, while 816 served the western portion, including Kansas City.
As demand for telephone numbers increased, additional area codes were introduced. Area code 417 was added in 1951 to serve the southwestern region, including Springfield. In 1996, area code 573 split from 314 to cover the eastern-central part of Missouri, including cities like Columbia and Jefferson City.
Further subdivisions occurred with area code 636 in 1999, splitting from 314 to serve suburbs of St. Louis. Area codes 660 and 975 were introduced in 1997 and 2022, respectively, to accommodate growing regions. Overlays like 557, introduced in 2022, ensure number availability without geographic splits.
